How to Read Your Tyre Size (e.g. 205/55R16)

When you go to buy tyres, you’ll see markings on your existing tyres like 205/55R16 91V. Understanding what these mean helps you get the right match — not just a guess.

  • 205 — Width in millimeters (from sidewall to sidewall)
  • 55 — Aspect ratio (height of sidewall as a percentage of width)
  • R16 — “R” = Radial construction, “16” = Rim diameter in inches
  • 91 — Load index (how much weight the tyre supports)
  • V — Speed rating (maximum safe speed)

For example: A tyre marked 225/45R17 94W means width = 225 mm, aspect = 45%, fits 17-inch wheels, load rating = 94, speed rating = W.
